Colby baseball takes victory over Maine-Farmington, 6-4

WATERVILLE, Maine ---- Tyler Hales (Lexington, Mass.) had two hits and three runs scored, while Colin Riggs (Duxbury, Mass.) had a big two-run single to lead the Colby College baseball team to a 6-4 non-conference victory over University of Maine at Farmington on Thursday at Coombs Field.

The Mules improve to 9-17 with the victory, while UMF fell to 8-17.

The game was scoreless until Hales doubled and scored on an RBI single by Roddy Ames (Cotiut, Mass.) in the fourth inning.

UMF took a 2-1 lead with singles runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Corey Provencher (Rumford, Maine) had an RBI triple to bring in Brody Artes (Howland, Maine) in the fifth. Peter McLaughlin (Benton, Maine) doubled and later scored on an error in the sixth.

Colby took the lead for good with four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Riggs had a clutch two-run single with two outs to bring in Hales and Ames. Colby's other two runs by Nick Spillane (Darien, Conn.) and Kyle McKay (Bedford, N.H.) came in on a UMF error.

The two teams traded runs in the seventh inning. Ryan DiPompo (Jay, Maine) drove in Aaron Wolfe (Wilton, Maine) with an RBI single for UMF, while the Mules' Hales singled and later scored on an error. UMF closed out the scoring with a lone run in the ninth with help from a Colby error.

Hales finished with a pair of hits and three runs scored for the Mules. Meanwhile, pitcher Sam Kennedy-Smith worked the first six innings to earn his second win of the season. Jon Vacca (Quincy, Mass.) pitched the ninth to get the save.

Wolfe had two hits and two walks for UMF. Provencher and Chip Burnham (Winthrop, Maine) also had two hits for the Beavers.
