Colby baseball loses tough 4-3 game to Trinity
WATERVILLE, Maine --- Trinity College scored twice in the fifth inning and added a lone run in the seventh inning to fight back from a 3-1 deficit in taking a 4-3 victory over Colby College in New England Small College Athletic Conference baseball Friday at Coombs Field.
Colby (5-6, 0-1 NESCAC East) led 2-1 after the first inning and got its other run in the bottom of the fourth.
Trinity (12-6, 3-1 NESCAC East) tied the game with two runs in the fifth inning on RBI singles by Neal White (Gloucester, Mass.) and Sean Killeen (Greenfield, Mass.). The Bantams went ahead for good in the seventh when Erik Paisley (Bethesda, Md.) led off with a single and later scored on an RBI single by Matt Stafford (Plymouth, Mass.).
Eric McGrath (Lynn, Mass.), who entered the game in the fifth inning, earned the win for Trinity, while Gabriel Rotman (Arlington, Mass.) earned his second save of the season by getting the final out of the seventh and pitching the final two innings.
Killeen led the Bantams with four hits and a pair of RBI. Stafford, Chandler Barnard (Lubbock, Texas) and Guy Gogliettino (Wallingford, Conn.) all had two hits for Trinity.
Andy Carr (Conway, N.H.) paced Colby with two hits and two RBI. Nick Spillane (Darien, Conn.) and Tom Salemy (Odessa, Fla.) had back-to-back singles to open Colby's first and advanced on an error. Carr then drove both of them home with his single.
In the fourth inning, Roddy Ames (Cotuit, Mass.) led off with a single for Colby and came home on a double by Colin Riggs (Duxbury, Mass.).
Sam Kennedy-Smith (Newton, Mass.) pitched nearly seven innings for Colby in taking the tough loss. Justin Clark (Brunswick, Maine) kept his earned run average at 0.00 with a two-plus inning stint in relief.
Colby and Trinity play a doubleheader at noon Saturday.
