Colby baseball splits doubleheader with Trinity

WATERVILLE, Maine ---- Andy Carr (Conway, N.H.) had three hits, including a pair of doubles, as the Colby College baseball team took a 10-8 win over Trinity College in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday at Coombs Field.

Trinity came back to win 12-8 in the second game.

Colby (6-7, 1-2 NESCAC East) beat the Bantams for the first time since the 2002 season with seven runs in the second inning. Carr had a two-run double in the inning, while Roddy Ames (Cotuit, Mass.), Brian Liberty (Hollis, N.H.) and Craig Cooper (Trumbull, Conn.) all had RBI singles.

Trinity (13-7, 4-2) chipped away at the 7-2 lead with two runs in the third inning and then took the lead with four runs in the top of the fifth. Guy Gogliettino (Wallingford, Conn.) had a bases clearing double in the fifth and later came around to score.

Colby answered back with two runs in the bottom of the fifth and a lone run in the sixth of the seven-inning opener. Kyle McKay (Bedford, N.H.) had an RBI single in the fifth and Tom Salemy (Odessa, Fla.) tripled and scored in the sixth. McKay went 3-for-3 and Carr also had three hits.

Robert Rosenbaum (Washington, D.C.), who entered the game in the fifth inning, got the Colby victory. Robert Whelan, who started the second game, got the final two outs for his first collegiate save.

In the nine-inning second game, Trinity got a pair of home runs and a double from Matt Stafford (Plymouth, Mass.) in the victory. Sean Killeen (Greenfield, Mass.) added four hits, while Gogliettino finished with a homer among his three hits.

Colby led 7-4 after four innings, but the Bantams got two in the fifth and took control of the game with five runs in the sixth inning. Stafford had a three-run homer in the sixth, a two-run shot in the fifth and an RBI double in the first inning for a total of six RBI.
