Women's soccer player Benson named NESCAC Player of the Week
WATERVILLE, Maine -- WATERVILLE, Maine --- Colby College junior goalkeeper Liza Benson (Lawrence Academy/Orchid, Fla.) was honored as New England Small College Athletic Conference Player of the Week in women's soccer for the week ending October 16.
Benson had two shutouts to help the Mules to a 1-0-1 record last week. She had 14 saves in a 0-0 tie with Amherst College in league play Saturday. Benson also stopped five shots in a 1-0 victory over St. Joseph's College last Wednesday.
In the latest NESCAC statistics, Benson leads the conference in goals against average (0.76) and save percentage (.890). Benson also ranks third in saves per game at 5.75.
Benson has played all but 6:30 in goal this year for Colby (5-2-3). She has allowed just eight goals in 10 games and has five shutouts. Benson's best shutout may have been in the season opener when the Mules took a 2-0 win against Tufts University, which was ranked sixth in last week's national poll.
Benson and Colby's defense ranks first in the NESCAC with a 0.75 goals against average this season. Amherst is tied with the Mules at eight goals allowed, but the Lord Jeffs have played one less game.
Colby will play host to Husson College in a non-conference game Thursday at 3 p.m.
