Women's cross country, Minty win at UMass-Dartmouth; men take ninth

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. ----- After taking fifth place at the NCAA Division III Championships last year, the Colby College women's cross country team started the 2005 season on a high note by winning the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth Invitational on Saturday.

The Colby women had five runners in the top 15 --- including winner Jess Minty (Concord, Mass.) ----- and easily won with a score of 43 in the 35-team field. Amherst was second with 88 points and Tufts took third with 122.

The Colby men had a solid finish of ninth out of 33 teams in the men's varsity race.

Minty, an All-American in indoor track and field, was first in the field of 264 women finishers on the five-kilometer course. Times for the women's varsity race were unavailable. Karen Prisby placed third for Colby behind Minty and Springfield's Meg Young. Liz Turner was 12th, Anna King placed 13th and Devan Fitzpatrick was 14th in her first collegiate race.

Dan Vassallo was 38th overall and 32nd among collegiate runners for the Colby men with a time of 26:19 over the five-mile course. John Swain placed 43rd overall (37th) and Jeff Alden was 51st overall (45th) for the Mules.

The Colby men had a score of 247 points, while Keene State won the meet with 73 points.
