WEST WINDSOR, N.J. --- The Colby College women's varsity eight placed second in the Petite Final (places 7-12) at the NCAA Division III Rowing Championships on Saturday.

Colby qualified for the Petite Final on Friday and placed second among the six boats in the race Saturday. Lewis & Clark College won the race with a time of 6:55.958, while Colby was less than two seconds back at 6:57.951 to place eighth overall. The Mules did beat the varsity eight boat of Puget Sound University (6:58.241).

Williams College won its second national title by placing two boats in the Grand Final (places 1-6). The Ephs finished second to Grand Final champion Ithaca College (6:46.373) in a time of 6:46.724. The second varsity eight boat for Williams placed third in 6:48.977.

Williams, Ithaca, Puget Sound, Smith College, Trinity College and Tufts University each had two varsity eight boats in the meet and had an opportunity to win the national title. Colby and Lewis & Clark both were at-large qualifiers and had just one varsity eight boat in the meet.

Sarah Bartels (Hanover, N.H.), Carrie Curtis (Hebron, Maine), Katie Curtis (Hebron, Maine), Margaret Duggan (Bronxville, N.Y.), Anne Feutz (Clayton, Mo.), coxswain Valerie Friedman (Pennington, N.J.), Mariah Hudnut (Fort Collins, Colo.), Austin Phillips (Madison, Conn.) and Justine Scott (Spokane, Wash.) were expected to race in Colby's varsity eight boat. Rachel Daly (Piermont, N.H.) and Dana Maglaris (New Canaan, Conn.) were alternates for the Mules.

Colby won the Division III national title in 2003, placed second in the inaugural race of 2002 and the Mules were sixth in 2005.

Williams won the first-ever NCAA Division III Rowing title in 2002. After the Mules won in 2003, Ithaca had won the last two championships.
