Colby football coach Mestieri to be honored by Gridiron Club of Greater Boston

WATERVILLE, Maine --- Colby College football coach Ed Mestieri has been named the Division II/III Coach of the Year by the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston and will be honored at a dinner on Thursday, January 12.

Mestieri has a 13-3 record in two years as Colby's head coach, including a 7-1 record in the 2005 season. He was an assistant coach for the Mules for 15 years before being hired for the head coaching position by Colby President William D. Adams.

The Gridiron Club of Greater Boston will have a social hour at 6 p.m. and dinner at 7 p.m. at the Bob Whelan College Football Awards Night on January 12 at The Burlington Marriott Hotel in Burlington, Massachusetts.

During Mestieri's association with the Colby program, the Mules have amassed a 75-60-1 record and have won or shared 13 Colby-Bates-Bowdoin (CBB) titles, with 11 of those won outright.

Colby finished second in the final New England Division III Football poll and was second in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) to unbeaten Trinity College. Mestieri has helped Colby win the last three CBB titles.

Mestieri was Colby's offensive coordinator, offensive line coach and recruiting coordinator before becoming head coach after the retirement of former coach Tom Austin, who was honored by the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston in 2000 as Division II/III Coach of the Year after the Mules went 7-1 and shared the NESCAC title with two other teams.

Mestieri credits much of Colby's success to his coaching staff, including longtime defensive coordinator Tom Dexter. Bill Lund, Rob Quinn, Jonathan Michaeles, Brandon Irwin and Mike Civitello make up the rest of the football staff.

Before coming to Colby, Mestieri had assistant coaching stints at Norwich University, Dartmouth College and Kent State University. He has a bachelor's degree from Springfield College and a master's from Norwich.
