Bates goes overtime to beat Colby

LEWISTON, Maine --- The Bates College men's basketball team came back from seven points down with 1:09 left in regulation to tie the game with Colby College and then went on to a 73-69 overtime victory in non-conference play Saturday.

Drew Cohen hit 1-of-2 free throws with 1:09 remaining to give Colby (5-7) a 62-55 lead. However, Bates stormed back with a 3-point play by Zak Ray with 1:03 left and then a 3-point shot by Ray with 28 seconds remaining to make it 62-61.

Cohen calmly sank two free throws with 19 seconds left to give the Mules a 64-61 lead, but Ray nailed another 3-point shot with 11 seconds left to send the game to overtime. Colby missed on a 3-point shot at the buzzer.

Colby held just one lead in the overtime session at 65-64, but the Mules had the game tied at 69-69 with 1:34 left after a jumper by guard Mark Gaudet. Bates went ahead for good when Bryan Wholey hit a jumper with 59 seconds left and then Ray hit two free throws with 21 seconds remaining for the final points.

Ray finished with 15 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and four steals for Bates (9-2). Rob Stockwell had 16 points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals for the Bobcats. Wholey added 15 points and 13 boards.

Cohen nearly had a triple-double with 17 points, 10 rebounds and nine blocked shots. Nick Farrell and Nate Dick both had 14 points, Gaudet added 12 points and Mackenzie Simpson hit some big shots down the stretch and had eight points for Colby.
