Denison holds off Colby in men's basketball

CHICAGO, Ill. --- Dan Hodgkinson had 18 points to help the Denison University hold off a furious Colby College comeback attempt in a 74-71 win over the Mules in the consolation game of the Midway Classic men's basketball tournament on Sunday at the University of Chicago.

Colby (0-2) trailed 68-57 with 6:42 left in the game, but the Mules battled back and got the lead down to one point on two occasions. Nick Farrell nailed a 3-point shot with 2:34 left to cut the lead to 70-69. After a basket by Denison (1-1) with 2:11 left, Jon Bandi converted a lay-up off an assist from Farrell to get the lead down to one again at 72-71 with 1:48 left.

The Mules had two opportunities to either tie or go ahead in the game, but missed a 3-point shot and the front end of a 1-and-1. Denison's Tony Julian hit a shot with 20 seconds left for a 74-71 lead and the final points of the game. Colby missed a 3-point shot with three seconds left.

Jordan Krantz had 16 points and Robb Hern added 11 points and eight rebounds for the winners.

Farrell finished with 16 points and eight assists for Colby. The Mules also got 12 points from Nate Dick, seven points and 10 rebounds from Drew Cohen, nine points from Mark Gaudet, and six points and five rebounds for Preston Decker.

Colby plays its home opener Tuesday at 7 p.m. against Lesley University.
