Late shot helps Husson men's basketball edge Colby

GORHAM, Maine -- Despite a collegiate-high 24 points from Mark Gaudet, the Colby College men's basketball team fell 77-75 to Husson College in the opening round of the Maine Event on Thursday at University of Southern Maine.

Colby (4-5) will play in the consolation game Friday at 6 p.m. against Southern Maine, which lost 63-62 to St. Joseph's in the other game.

Buddy Leavitt hit a jumper with one second remaining to give Husson (3-5) the victory. He finished with a game-high 26 points and six rebounds. Jason Harvey added 18 points, six rebounds, four assists and four steals. Phil White added 15 points and 10 boards for Husson.

The Mules trailed by nine points with 6:42 left in the game, but stormed back behind a four-point play from Gaudet. With Colby trailing 71-64 at the time, Gaudet nailed a 3-point shot, was fouled and hit the free throw. After a steal by Gaudet, Jon Bandi hit a lay-up with 2:53 remaining to get Colby back within one point at 71-70.

Colby took its final lead of the game at 72-71 when Mackenzie Simpson nailed two free throws with 1:37 remaining. Just 13 seconds later, Leavitt hit a pair of free throws to put the Beavers up 73-72. Husson added to the lead when White scored on a lay-up with 35 seconds left.

Colby point guard Nick Farrell tied the game at 75-75 with a 3-point shot with 17 seconds remaining, but Leavitt made his big shot to give the Beavers the victory.

Gaudet was 5-for-7 from 3-point range and shot 9-for-9 from the foul line. He is shooting 57 percent (25-for-44) from 3-point range and 94 percent (17-for-18) from the foul line this season.

Drew Cohen added 11 points, nine rebounds, four blocked shots and three assists. However, his foul problems may have been the key to the game. Cohen played 27 minutes and fouled out of the contest with 5:28 remaining. Nate Dick added 13 points, Farrell had 11 points and Bandi had seven points off the bench.
