Southern Maine beats Colby in men's basketball

GORHAM, Maine --- Josh Daniels had 23 points and six rebounds in helping the University of Southern Maine men's basketball team take a 77-68 victory over Colby College in non-conference play Wednesday night.

Foster Oakley had 17 points for the Huskies (3-3), who led 38-33 at the break. Andy Frost chipped in with 14 points, five rebounds, four assists and seven steals. Bill Hardwick had a double-double with 10 points and a team-high 11 rebounds.

Colby center Drew Cohen led all scorers with 26 points and added 11 rebounds and three blocked shots. Mark Gaudet hit six of his 10 shots on the way to 17 points and Nick Farrell had 12 points.

The Mules scored the game's first eight points as Gaudet buried a pair of three-points shots and Cohen made two free throws to grab the early advantage. Southern Maine responded with an 11-2 run to take an 11-10 lead on a pair of freebies by Frost with 14:21 to play.

Over the next six minutes, there were four lead changes and four ties before the Huskies took the lead for good on a pair of charity tosses by junior Ian Hebert. Hebert's two free throws ignited an 11-0 run that gave the Huskies a 35-25 lead. Colby chipped away at the margin over the final five minutes to trail by five (38-33) at the break.

Southern Maine maintained the lead throughout the second half, but was never able to pull away. Colby cut the lead to two (55-53) on a Gaudet basket and free throw with 12:09 to go. Oakley sparked a 7-0 run scoring six points to push the lead back to nine (62-53) with 7:33 to play.

The Mules made one more push to get back within three (64-61) after a basket by senior Nick Dick with 3:34 left. Southern Maine, with the shot clock running down, got a big three-point shot from sophomore Walter Phillips that sparked a 9-2 run to increase the lead to 10 (73-63) with 1:36 to play.

Colby (3-4) plays host to Bowdoin at 7 p.m. Saturday.
