Colby men's basketball tops Williams, clinches NESCAC playoff bid
WATERVILLE, Maine ----- The Colby College men's basketball team had five
players in double figures in taking a 67-61 victory over Williams College
on Friday night at Wadsworth Gymnasium to clinch a New England Small
College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) playoff spot.
The Mules have won three straight games and stand at 9-13 overall and 3-5
in league play. Colby clinched a spot when Middlebury College lost 58-56 to
Bowdoin College on Friday. The Mules are guaranteed to finish ahead of
Middlebury (1-7 league) and Wesleyan University (0-8) in the 10-team league
to make the eight-team playoffs.
Drew Cohen (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.) had 16 points, 10 rebounds, three
assists and two blocked shots to lead Colby. Nick Farrell (Aspen, Colo.)
added 15 points, six rebounds and three assists for the winners. Mark
Gaudet (Bingham, Maine) finished with 12 points, while Andrew Jenkins
(Gorham, Maine) had 10 points, six rebounds and five assists. Mackenzie
Simpson (Casco, Maine) went 7-for-7 from the foul line and had 10 points,
four rebounds and three assists.
Williams (17-6, 5-3) trailed 35-33 at halftime, but battled back and held a
55-48 lead with 8:47 left in the contest. Colby, though, chipped away at
the deficit and took the lead at 57-56 when Jenkins had a 3-point play with
4:36 remaining.
With the score tied at 59-59, Cohen put the Mules ahead for good with a
lay-up with 2:51 left. Farrell added a jumper with 1:23 remaining for a
63-59 lead. Williams cut the lead to 63-60, but Farrell added two free
throws with 34 seconds left to make it 65-60. The Mules outscored the Ephs
2-1 at the foul line in the final 30 seconds.
Colby helped its cause with just five turnovers in the game, including just
one turnover by the Mule guards.
Chris Rose (Middletown, N.Y.) had 20 points, 14 rebounds and three assists
for Williams. Chris Shalvoy (Rochester, N.Y.) added nine points, 11 assists
and five rebounds for the Ephs. Andrew Newton (Whitinsville, Mass.) had 11
points and seven rebounds, while Casey Gibbons (Weston, Mass.) had nine points.
Colby will play host to Middlebury at 3 p.m. Saturday in the final NESCAC
regular season game. Williams will play at Bowdoin at 3 p.m. as well.
