Men's basketball tops Middlebury to win fourth straight
WATERVILLE, Maine ---- Colby College junior center Drew Cohen (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.) had 27 points, 14 rebounds and eight blocked shots to lead the Mules to a 78-64 victory over Middlebury College in the final New England Small College Athletic Conference regular season game of the season on Saturday at Wadsworth Gymnasium.
Colby won its fourth straight game and moved to 10-13 overall and finished 4-5 in the league to earn the seventh seed in the upcoming NESCAC playoffs. The Mules will play at second-seeded Trinity College in a NESCAC quarterfinal next Saturday at 3 p.m.
Cohen shot 9-for-15 from the field and was 9-for-13 from the foul line. His eight blocked shots gave him an even 100 for the season, good enough to lead NCAA Division III in that category.
Nick Farrell (Aspen, Colo.) had 11 points, eight assists and six rebounds for Colby. Mark Gaudet (Bingham, Maine) also had 11 points, while Nate Dick (North Attleboro, Mass.) and Andrew Jenkins (Gorham, Maine) both had 10 points.
Colby led 34-30 at halftime, but took control in the second half as Cohen had 18 points, seven rebounds and four blocks in the final 20 minutes.
Middlebury (12-12, 1-8 NESCAC), which missed out on the league playoffs, got 12 points, six assists and five rebounds from Ben Rudin (Scarsdale, N.Y.). Chris Dowd (Beverly, Mass.) had 11 points and Sam Daly (Providence, R.I.) added nine for the Panthers.
