Trinity holds off Colby in NESCAC quarterfinal
HARTFORD, Conn. ---- The Colby College men's basketball team battled back to within one point with just seven seconds left in the game after trailing by 10 with 3:26 remaining, but Trinity College held on for an 84-81 win in a New England Small College Athletic Conference quarterfinal game on Saturday.
The Mules end their season at 11-14, while Trinity improves to 18-5 and will play a NESCAC semifinal game next weekend.
Trinity took a 78-68 lead with 3:26 left in the game. The Mules, though, fought back and got big 3-point shots from Mark Gaudet and Nick Farrell in the final minute to get within one point at 82-81 with seven seconds remaining.
The Bantams' Tyler Rhoten calmly sank two free throws with seven seconds left and then the Mules missed a 3-point shot at the buzzer that would have tied the game.
Colby led by as much as five points in the first half at 31-26 after Andrew Jenkins nailed a 3-point shot with 1:17 left. The Bantams scored the final five points of the half for a 31-31 tie at the break.
The Mules got another huge game from junior center Drew Cohen, who won the big man battle with Rhoten with 29 points, 16 rebounds and five blocked shots. Cohen finished his junior season with 840 points, 463 rebounds and 203 blocked shots in his career at Colby.
Jenkins hit 8-for-11 from the field and was 6-for-7 from 3-point range in scoring 24 points for the Mules. Gaudet added 19 points, including 3-for-5 from 3-point range, and point guard Nick Farrell had nine assists.
Rhoten finished with 18 points (just 6-for-18 shooting) and had 12 rebounds for Trinity. Kino Clarke also had 18 points for the Bantams.
