Colby men's hockey falls to top-ranked Middlebury
MIDDLEBURY, Vt. ----- Middlebury earned a pair of key NESCAC points
with a 6-2 win over second place Colby. The Panthers scored three third
period goals to seal the win, in front of a home crowd of 2,250 at the
Kenyon Arena.
Middlebury took a 1-0 lead at the 8:31 mark as Mickey Gilchrist
skated in from the left boards before scoring in front with a backhander.
Colby answered with just 31 seconds left in the period as Joel Covelli
scored falling to his knees with a wrister to the top right corner.
The Panthers regained the lead 5:06 into the second period as
Jeff Smith scored with a rocket from the left point. Colby came back once
again as Greg Osborne scored on a one-timer with a great feed from Arthur
Fritch for the five-on-three power play goal. The Panthers gained a
little breathing room with 28 seconds to go in the period when Samuel
Driver s centering pass went in off a defender s stick.
The lead grew to 4-2 6:13 into the third period as Mickey
Gilchrist scored a power play goal, flipping a shot into the top of net
after a rebound. Eric LaFreniere made it a 5-2 game at 10:59 as he put in
his own rebound, while Evgeny Saidachev added a power play goal at 15:07
Ross Cherry made 13 saves in goal to earn the win, while Ben
Grandjean suffered the loss, making 25 saves on the night.
