Tufts men's hockey takes win over Colby
WATERVILLE, Maine --- Matt McCarthy (Medfield, Mass.) scored three goals and Joe Milo (Woodbury, N.Y.) had two goals, including the game-winning tally, to lead the Tufts University men's hockey team to a 7-5 win over 12th-ranked Colby College on Saturday at Alfond Rink.
Colby (11-5, 7-4 NESCAC/ECAC East) scored the first two goals of the third period to tie the game at 5-5. Ryan Chrenek (Grande Prarie, Alberta) scored shorthanded just 1:37 into the final period and Arthur Fritch (South Boston, Mass.) tallied on the power play at 7:41.
Tufts (8-5-2, 5-5-1), though, went ahead for good when Milo scored at 9:07 off the third assist of the day from Ken Cleary (Cambridge, Mass.). McCarthy added an empty net goal at 19:06 for the final score of the game.
Colby came out strong with two goals from Patrick Rutherford (Truro, Nova Scotia) and T.J. Kelley (Ridgefield, Conn.) in the opening 5:48 of the contest.
McCarthy scored two key goals at 9:13 and 13:18 (shorthanded) to pull the Jumbos back in the game. Fritch and Milo traded goals in the final five minutes to make it 3-3 after one period.
Tufts got the only two goals of the second period from Greg McCarthy (Medfield, Mass.) and Greg O'Connell (Cohasset, Mass.).
James Kalec (East Amherst, N.Y.) stopped 34 shots for Tufts.
