Colby men's hockey defeats 10th-ranked Babson
BABSON PARK, Mass. -- Colby College scored four unanswered goals,
including three in the third period, to claim a 4-1 victory over host
Babson College in a season-opening ECAC East/NESCAC matchup on Friday
night.
The Mules (1-0-0, 1-0-0 NESCAC) will now close out the
weekend with a game at UMass-Boston on Saturday at 3 p.m., while the Beavers
(0-1-0, 0-1-0 ECAC East), who entered the season ranked 10th in the
nation by U.S. College Hockey Online, will host ninth-ranked Bowdoin.
After a scoreless first period, Babson sophomore John Geverd (Hookset,
N.H.) gave his team a 1-0 lead when he scored his first of the year off
an assist from classmate Mike Venit (Ridley Park, Pa.) just 1:15 into
the second. However, Colby answered when sophomore Joe Rothwell
(Unionville, Ontario) scored on the power play at 7:56, tying the contest
at 1-1.
The Mules grabbed their first lead of the game at 7:19 of the
third period, when first-year Joel Covelli (Carlisle, Ontario) netted
what would prove to be the game-winner. Covelli then assisted junior
Greg Osborne (Stoughton, Mass.) on Colby's third goal at 15:05, and
first-year Cass Buttafuoco (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) finished off the
scoring just 23 seconds later to seal the 4-1 win.
First-year goalie Andy Cook (Golden Valley, Minn.) finished with 35
saves in net for Colby, while senior Craig Weiner (Thornwood, N.Y.)
turned away 31 shots in defeat.
