Men's hockey battles back for win over Nichols
BRUNSWICK, Maine --- The 15th-ranked Colby College men's hockey team scored the final three goals of the game in the third period to pull out a 5-4 victory over Nichols College in the opening day of the Bowdoin-Colby Face-Off Classic on Saturday at Bowdoin College.
The Mules (3-0) trailed 4-2 when Kyle Cook of Nichols scored 3:23 into the third period.
The Bison burned themselves with two costly penalties at 3:59 and 4:02 to give Colby a two-man advantage. The Mules made them pay when T.J. Kelley scored at 4:19 off assists from Josh Reber and Arthur Fritch. Colby then tied the game at 5:11 when Reber tallied off assists from Kelley and Greg Osborne.
Colby got the game-winning goal off the stick of Fritch at 10:47 with another assist from Adam Marino.
The Mules led 2-1 after the opening period on two goals by Greg Osborne, who leads Colby in scoring with five goals and one assist after three games. He scored from Patrick Rutherford at 4:52 for a quick 1-0 lead. After Nichols tied the game at 1-1, Osborne scored on the power play from Fritch and Joe Rothwell.
Nichols, though, scored the next three goals of the game to go ahead 4-2. The Bison had the only two goals of the second period and Cook had his goal early in the third period.
Andy Cook stopped 24 shots in goal for this third victory of the season for Colby. Keith Fink also stopped 24 shots for Nichols.
Colby will play Salve Regina in its home opener Sunday at 5:30 p.m. as part of the Face-Off Classic. Nichols takes on Bowdoin at 2 p.m. at Colby's Alfond Arena. Bowdoin and Salve Regina played in the later game Saturday night.
