Colby men's hockey unbeaten at 5-0 after win over Southern Maine
WATERVILLE, Maine --- First-year forward Joel Covelli (Carlisle, Ontario) scored his third game-winning goal of the season and the Colby College men's hockey team stayed unbeaten at 5-0 with a 6-3 victory over University of Southern Maine on Tuesday night at Alfond Arena.
Southern Maine (1-3) had leads of 2-1 and 3-2 in the game, but the 13th-ranked Mules scored four unanswered goals in the final 9:50 of play to pull out the victory.
Covelli got the game winner with 2:37 left off assists from Ryan Chrenek (Grande Prarie, Alberta) and Patrick Rutherford (Truro, Nova Scotia). After Southern Maine picked up two penalties in a span of six seconds, Colby added power play goals by Greg Osborne (Stoughton, Mass.) and T.J. Kelley (Ridgefield, Conn.) to break open what was a tight game.
The Huskies went ahead 3-2 at 3:58 of the third period when Chris Sparkes (St. John's, Nfld.) tallied. He also had assists on Southern Maine's other two goals.
Sophomore defensemen Arthur Fritch (South Boston, Mass.), who had one goal and three assists in the game, tied the game 3-3 on the power play at 10:10.
Kelley finished with two goals and two assists for the Mules. He had the opening goal of the game at 5:20 of the first period, but Mark Carragher (Charlottetown, PEI) scored at 8:50 and 12:05 to give the Huskies a 2-1 lead after one period.
Cass Buttafuoco (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) had Colby's goal in the second period. Josh Reber (Edina, Minn.) had three assists for the Mules.
