Colby men's hockey takes big win over Amherst
WATERVILLE, Maine --- T.J. Kelley (Ridgefield, Conn.) had a pair of goals and an assist as the Colby College men's hockey team took a 5-1 win over Amherst College in New England Small College Athletic Conference play Saturday at Alfond Rink.
Kelley has a team-best 33 points this season with 13 goals and 20 assists.
Colby, which also took a 5-1 win over Hamilton College on Friday night, moved to 13-7 overall and 9-6 in the NESCAC/ECAC East. Amherst fell to 12-7-1 overall and 9-5-1 in the league.
The Mules scored twice in the opening nine minutes to take the lead for good. Ryan Chrenek (Grande Prairie, Alberta) tallied just 3:49 into the contest and defensemen Arthur Fritch (South Boston, Mass.) made it 2-0 at 9:00.
Amherst made it 2-1 at the first intermission when Erik Lund (Edina, Minn.) scored at 13:14.
Kelley got his first goal and the only score of the second period at 9:31.
The Mules added insurance goals from Joel Covelli (Carlisle, Ontario) at 6:44 of the third period and Kelley got his second goal at 12:43. Josh Reber (Edina, Minn.), Greg Osborne (Stoughton, Mass.) and Patrick Rutherford (Truro, Nova Scotia) all had two assists.
Ben Grandjean (Waterford, Conn.) stopped 29 shots to post the victory in goal. Josh Fillman (Charlestown, Mass.) made 22 saves for Amherst.
