Colby men's lacrosse at 2-1 after win over Babson
WATERVILLE, Maine --- The Colby College men's lacrosse team started and finished strong in a 14-7 non-conference victory over Babson College on Thursday at Bill Alfond Field.
The Mules (2-1) opened up a 5-1 lead after the first quarter and then exploded for six goals in the fourth quarter to put the game away. Babson (0-4) had fought back to make it 8-6 after three quarters.
Ryan Scott (Columbia, N.J.) had five goals and was one of three players with five points. Rory Murphy (Brunswick, Maine) added four goals and one assist, while Caddy Brooks (Darien, Conn.) had two goals and three assists. Zach Goodnough (Brunswick, Maine) and Drew Piekarski (East Sandwich, Mass.) both had one goal and one assist. Todd Boertzel (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) had the other goal for the Mules.
Babson, playing its fourth straight road game to start the season, received one goal and two assists from Mike O'Connell (Dedham, Mass.). Mike Maher (Cumberland, Maine) and Matt Harrington (Hanover, Mass.) both had two goals, while Nate Brawn (Topsham, Maine) had one goal and one assist.
Colby long-stick midfielder Nate Werlin had eight ground balls and eight takeaways to lead the defense. Chafic George (Lincoln, R.I.) finished with four ground balls and four takeaways. Colby goaltender Jeff Miller (Marshfield, Mass.) played the first 56 minutes and made 10 saves.
The Mules play at Colorado College on Sunday at 9 p.m. (EST) in the first of two games in the state. Colby also plays Williams College at Colorado College on Tuesday. Babson plays at Norwich University on Saturday at 1 p.m.
