Colby loses tough overtime game to Conn. College in men's lacrosse
WATERVILLE, Maine --- Colby sophomore Drew Piekarski (East Sandwich, Mass.) tried to play the hero, but in the end it was Connecticut College sophomore Craig Audin (Sudbury, Mass.) who took the role, scoring in sudden-death overtime to deliver an important win for the Camels.
The victory gives Conn. College (6-6, 3-4 NESCAC) good positioning to earn a NESCAC playoff spot, while Colby (5-7, 2-6 NESCAC) faces an uphill battle in what remains of the season.
It was a back-and-forth game - the teams were tied 5-5 at the half, and neither team led at any point by more than two goals. It looked as though the Camels were going to squeak away with the win when Joe Higgins (Setauket, N.Y.) put his team up 10-9 with 3:23 left to play, but with time running down Colby's Piekarski willed his way to the net and tied the game with 20.7 seconds left on the clock.
The Mules were granted little reprieve, however, as Audin beat a defender and Colby goalie Jeff Miller (Marshfield, Mass.) to tally the game-winning goal 2:06 into overtime.
Piekarski finished three goals, while Colby's Dan Schupack (Cheshire, Conn.) had two goals, and Rory Murphy (Brunswick, Maine) had a goal and an assist. Audin also had three goals total for Conn. College. Jesse Stevenson (Marshfield, Mass.) added two goals to the effort, and Brad Luckhardt (Danville, Calif.) finished with two assists.
Jeff Miller had 11 saves in goal, while Conn. College's Randall Morrison (Erdenheim, Pa.) ended the game with ten.
