Colby men's lacrosse falls to Bates, 9-7
WATERVILLE, Maine ---- The 10th-ranked Bates College men's lacrosse team got down early but was able to chip away to forge a halftime tie and then got ahead in the second half in posting a 9-7 victory over Colby College in New England Small College Athletic Conference play Wednesday at Bill Alfond Field.
Colby (2-5, 0-4 NESCAC) opened up a 4-0 lead just 12 minutes into the contest, with two of the goals coming from leading scorer Ryan Scott (Columbia, N.J.). Bates (9-0, 5-0), though, got two goals in the final 2:10 of the first quarter to cut the lead in half.
Bates scored the first three goals of the second quarter to take a 5-4 lead. Colby tied the game at 5-5 at halftime when Rory Murphy (Brunswick, Maine) tallied with 2:58 left to the break.
Matt Erisman (Nantucket, Mass.), who led the Bobcats with four goals and two assists, had a big second half. He played a part in all four goals with three goals and one assist, plus scored the only two goals of the third quarter to put Bates up for good.
The Mules did cut the lead to one goal on two occasions in the fourth quarter only to see Bates score to extend the lead back to two goals.
Murphy finished with three goals and one assist for Colby, while Scott had three goals. Drew Piekarski (East Sandwich, Mass.) added two assists.
Paul Kazarian (Providence, R.I.) stopped six shots for Bates, while Jeff Miller (Marshfield, Mass.) made 13 saves for Colby.
