Colby men's soccer falls in overtime
BRUNSWICK, Maine - Bowdoin senior Andrew Russo scored the game-winner with less than two minutes remaining in the second overtime, lifting the Polar Bear men's soccer team a 2-1 victory over Colby on Saturday. Combined with a season-opening win over Bates last weekend, this victory gives Bowdoin (3-0-0) their fourth outright CBB (Colby-Bates-Bowdoin) Crown in the last five seasons. Colby drops to 1-2-0 with the defeat.
Bowdoin scored the game's first goal just 14:44 into the contest, when a free kick from Anthony Regis was one-timed into the net by Wolf Greuber, giving the Polar Bears a 1-0 edge. The Polar Bears had numerous chances to add to their advantage, but were continually stymied by Colby netminder Josh Kahane, who made several fantastic stops among his eight saves.
Although the Polar Bears controlled the pace of play, a key Colby run paid off late in regulation. Mule captain Bobby Abendroth lofted a well-placed ball from the wing into the box, where Will Kinder's spectacular diving header tied the contest with 9:24 to go. Abendroth had a chance to win the game in regulation, but a shot from inside the box sailed wide with seven minutes to play and the contest went into overtime.
In the first extra-session, Bowdoin had a fantastic chance when a ball played into the penalty area bounced around several defenders, coming to the foot of Anthony Regis. But Regis' shot was deflected out by a Colby defender and cleared as the game went into the second overtime period.
The teams traded possession for most of the period before a Bowdoin run was rewarded with a free kick just outside the penalty area with less than two minutes remaining. Russo struck a low, bending shot that tucked inside the left post for a Bowdoin victory. The tally marked the 30th career goal for Russo, who now stands second all-time at Bowdoin in career goals, just two behind David Bulow '02 and Gima Asmerom '73.
