Jospe takes ninth for women's Nordic team at Sugarloaf
CARRABASSETT VALLEY, Maine ---- Alex Jospe earned a top 10 finish by placing ninth in the Nordic skiing classic sprint on the opening day of the Colby College Carnival at Sugarloaf USA on Friday.
The ski carnival has been extended to three days after the alpine runs were postponed after fierce winds Thursday knocked out power that affects the timing system and the communications on the start and finish lines. The alpine slalom will be run Saturday along with the Nordic mass start races, while alpine will finish up the event Sunday with the giant slalom run.
Jospe clocked a time of 2:23.63 for the third fastest time in the qualifying run to lead the women's team to a seventh place finish out of 10 teams. Jospe then was one of 32 skiers to move on to the heat racing that eventually decided the place finishers. Hillary Easter took 22nd place in 2:32.20, Kathleen Maynard was 42nd with a 2:36.78 and Alyssa Lee clocked a 2:38.07 for 48th place.
"The day went better than I expected," Colby head coach Tracey Cote said. "Neither of the teams are sprinting teams and the women are just two points out of sixth place and just six points out of fourth place. The ninth place finish was an awesome result for Alex."
The Colby men also finished in seventh place as John Swain was 26th in a time of 2:06.29. Fred Bailey placed 31st in 2:07.38, Kris Dobie was 33rd with a 2:07.65 and Austin Ross took 48th in 2:09.74.
With the regular Nordic trails light in snow, the race went on at the bottom of the alpine ski hill in a makeshift 450-meter course.
