Centauro, Maynard lead Colby ski teams

CARRABASSETT VALLEY, Maine ---- Jody Centauro finished in 14th place in the slalom for the Colby College men's alpine team at the Colby Winter Ski Carnival on Saturday.

Competition at Sugarloaf USA will end Sunday with the giant slalom runs.

Centauro had runs of 1:02.79 and 56.72 for a two-run total time of 1:59.51 as the Mules placed eighth out of nine teams. Sam Witherspoon placed 25th for the Colby men with a 2:37.44 (1:07.44, 1:30). Charlie Reed was in seventh place after the first run with a 57.04, but he did not finish his second run.

The women's alpine team was seventh out of nine teams as the Mules got a 22nd place finish from Alissa Consenstein (1:42.91, 48.52 and 54.39). Brett Wagenheim was 23rd with a 1:43.49 (49.28, 54.21), Caitlin Healey took 24th in 1:44.46 (48.35, 56.11), Julia Peck Coffin had a 1:47.58 (50.41, 57.17) for 30th place and Ashley Best took 31st in 1:48.13 (50.82, 57.31).

In Nordic skiing, first-year skier Kathleen Maynard placed 17th in the 15-kilometer free technique with a time of 55:00.3 to help the Mules place seventh in the event. Alex Jospe took 35th in 58:02.2 and Hillary Easter was 37th with a 58:14.9.

Kris Dobie placed 23rd in 1:00:02.9 and John Swain was 24th with a 1:00:20.4 for the Colby men in a 20K free technique race. Fred Bailey took 36th place in 1:01:32.2 for the Mules.
