Men's nordic team, Lathrop have good days at Dartmouth Ski Carnaval
HANOVER, N.H. ----- The Colby College men's Nordic team finished in fifth
place and women's alpine skier Abbi Lathrop took fifth in the giant slalom
at the Dartmouth College Ski Carnival on Friday.
The Nordic races were held at Craftsbury, Vt., because of the lack of snow
in Hanover. The Colby men had six racers in the top 40 of the 20-kilometer
free race to finish just one point out of fourth place. The Mules had 73
points and St. Lawrence was fourth with 74 points in the 13-team field.
Fred Bailey finished in 15th place for the Colby men with a time of
57:50.7, while Kris Dobie was 19th in 58:16.5. Brandon Smithwood placed
31st in 59:37.5, Matt Briggs was 35th in 1:00:21.1, Austin Ross took 38th
in 1:00:29.0 and John Swain was 39th in 1:00:48.8.
Lathrop was consistent for the women's alpine team with runs of 59.08 and
59.08 for a two-run total time of 1:58.16. Ashley Best took 29th place in
2:03.62, McKenzie Wessen was 31st in 2:04.87 and Brett Wagenheim placed
34th in 2:05.11 as the Colby women were sixth out of 11 schools.
In women's Nordic skiing, Kathleen Maynard took 26th place in 46:05.2 over
the 15-kilometer course to help the Mules place eighth of 11 teams. Alex
Jospe took 29th place in 46:07.1 and Hillary Easter was 34th in 46:59.5.
Charlie Reed was the top Colby finisher in the men's giant slalom in 30th
place in 1:56.62 over two runs. Jody Centauro placed 32nd in 1:56.91 as the
Mules were ninth of 12 teams.
After the first day of competition, Colby ranks eighth out of 15 teams in
the overall team scores.
