Men's alpine third in slalom, women's Nordic takes fourth
HANCOCK, Mass. – The Colby College men’s alpine team had three skiers in the top 12 to finish in third place in the slalom at the Williams College Ski Carnival at Jiminy Peak on Friday.
The Colby women’s Nordic team had three skiers in the top 25 to take fourth place in the 10-kilometer freestyle event.
Jody Centauro (Beaconsfield, Quebec) had times of 51.50 and 1:05.64 for a two-run total time of 1:57.14 to take sixth place in the men’s slalom. Charlie Reed (Park City, Utah) was 10th in 1:58.22 with runs of 54.91 and 1:03.31. Reed had the second-best second run, including a better time than the top six overall finishers. Rory Kelly (Charlottesville, Va.) had his best finish of the season by taking 12th in 1:58.38, including a 1:03.50 in the second run that was third best of the day. The Mules also had Sam Pelletier (Montpelier, Vt.) take 24th place in 2:12.44.
University of Vermont won the 10-team slalom event with 101 points and was followed by Williams with 99 points and Colby with 92. The Mules finished nine points ahead of University of New Hampshire and Bates College and was 18 points ahead of Dartmouth College.
The women’s Nordic team had their best finish in many seasons and likely had the top finish they could expect this season. Vermont, Dartmouth and Middlebury all finished with more than 100 points and routinely are the top three teams week after week. The Mules had 78 points and defeated New Hampshire by three points, St. Lawrence University by four and Bates by 16 points in the 10-team field.
First-year skier Kathleen Maynard (Jackson, N.H.) finished in 11th place in 26:55.5 for the Colby women. Hillary Easter (Jay, Maine) took 23rd place in 27:58.2 and Alex Jospe (Pittsford, N.Y.) was 25th in 28:05.8. Aime Schwartz (Aspen, Colo.) was 39th in 29:50.7.
The women’s slalom was limited to just one run because of harsh weather conditions and Colby took sixth place out of 10 schools. Abbi Lathrop (North Conway, N.H.) finished ninth in 47.39 to lead the Mules. Brett Wagenheim (Pittsford, Vt.) was 27th in 51.67, Alissa Consenstein (Syracuse, N.Y.) placed 30th in 51.88, Caitlin Healey (Fitchburg, Mass.) took 31st with a 52.17 and Ashley Best (South Salem, N.Y.) was 37th in 53.45.
The men’s Nordic team placed seventh out of 11 teams as Fred Bailey (Andover, Maine) took 25th place in the 10-kilmometer freestyle race in 23:41.7. Austin Ross (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) took 30th in 23:54.6, Kris Dobie (Walpole, N.H.) had a 24:11.9 for 34th place and Jeff Alden (Caribou, Maine) took 38th place in 24:27.2.
In the total team score (Nordic and alpine combined) after one day, Colby is in sixth place out of 11 schools with 299 points.
