Centauro takes 14th for men's alpine team
STOWE, Vt. ---- Jody Centauro (Beaconsfield, Quebec) placed 14th for the Colby College men's alpine team in the slalom and Abbi Lathrop (North Conway, N.H.) had a big opening run for the women's alpine team at the University of Vermont Winter Ski Carnival on Friday at Stowe.
Centauro had a two-run total time of 2:00.34 (58.92, 1:01.42) to help the Colby men place sixth out of 11 teams in the slalom. Rory Kelly (Charlottesville, Va.) took 23rd place with a total time of 2:04.19 (1:01.85, 1:02.34), while Christian Talmage (Kingfield, Maine) was 32nd in 2:12.60.
Lathrop, who missed the opening two carnivals of the season, had a blazing 44.88 on her first run to take first place heading into the final run. Vermont's Jamie Kingsbury, who finished second overall, was in second after the first run with a 45.50.
Lathrop had problems on her second run of 56.76 and ended up in 27th place overall with a 1:41.64. Vermont's Jilyne McDonald easily had the fastest second run at 42.54 and won the competition with a two-run total time of 1:28.26.
Brett Wagenheim (Pittsford, Vt.) had the top finish for the Colby women in 23rd with a 1:40.29. Caitlin Healey (Fitchburg, Mass.) took 24th place in 1:40.88 and Ashley Best (South Salem, N.Y.) was 26th in 1:41.08. The Colby women placed seventh out of 10 teams.
In men's Nordic skiing, John Swain (St. Paul, Minn.) was 17th in the 10-kilometer classic with a time of 35:47.4. Fred Bailey (Andover, Maine) took 20th place in 35:59.4, Kris Dobie (Walpole, N.H.) was 38th in 37:26.0 and Austin Ross (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) placed 39th in 37:33.2 as the Colby men were seventh out of 12 teams.
Alex Jospe (Pittsford, N.Y.) paced the women's Nordic team with a 22nd place finish in 20:21.1 in the 5K classic race. Kathleen Maynard (Jackson, N.H.) took 31st place in 20:53.6, Hillary Easter (Jay, Maine) was 33rd in 21:12.7 and Aime Schwartz (Aspen, Colo.) placed 35th in 21:23.1 as the women's team was seventh of 11 teams.
In the total team score, Colby is eighth out of 13 teams heading into Saturday's competition.
