Lathrop seventh in slalom; Centauro, Reed in top 25
STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. --- Abbi Lathrop's amazing week at the NCAA Skiing Championships continued late Friday night when the Colby College sophomore earned second team All-America honors for finishing seventh in the slalom.
Lathrop won the NCAA title in the giant slalom on Wednesday. She is the first Colby athlete to compete against Division I schools and earn a national title.
After finishing 10th in the first run Friday, Lathrop blazed down the hill and had the fastest second run of any skier at 41.24 for a two-run total of 1:23.83. University of Colorado's Lucie Zikova, the winner of the slalom, had a 42.36 second run and a 40.41 opening run for a two-run total of 1:22.77.
Lathrop's first run of 42.59 put her out of a chance to win another national title, but the opportunity earn All-America status in the event was still there. The top five skiers earn first team honors and the next five skiers are on the second team. Lathrop also earned All-America honors in both events as a first-year student and finished her Colby skiing career with a school record six All-America honors (four giant slalom, two slalom).
For the Colby men, Jody Centauro finished in a tie for 16th place and Charlie Reed was 25th. Both skiers, like Lathrop, had better second runs to improve their standing. Centauro had times of 39.01 and 38.06 for a two-run total of 1:17.07 to move from 20th place after the first run to 16th. Reed, competing in his fourth straight NCAA meet, had a 1:19.01 finish on runs of 39.98 and 38.06 in moving from 29th to 25th.
Colby's team was in 14th after the third day of competition. Skiing concludes Saturday with a Nordic event.
