Colby softball starts season with tough losses
FORT MYERS, Fla. --- Colby College received 18 strikeouts and just one walk in two games from its pitchers, but the Mules could not generate enough offense in a 1-0 loss to Luther College and a 3-0 setback to D'Youville College in the opening two softball games of the season in Florida on Sunday.
Luther scored in the bottom of the seventh inning to pull out the victory in the opener. Colby pitcher Lauren Olmsted struck out 13 and walked just one, but the Mules managed just only one hit by first-year player Tory Starr.
In the game against D'Youville, the Mules had a 6-4 advantage in hits and left 14 runners on base. Tory Starr had two hits, while the Mules got one hit each from Miki Starr, Mollie Puskar, Alyssa Charsky and Alyssa Crowell.
D'Youville scored three unearned runs in the sixth inning off losing pitcher Lindsey Toomey, who had five strikeouts and no walks.
Colby plays two more games in Florida on Monday with a 9 a.m. game against Gustavus Adolphus and a 1 p.m. contest with Wisconsin-Whitewater.
