Colby softball team splits games with Southern Maine
FORT MYERS, Fla. ---- Lauren Olmsted (Lexington, Mass.) struck out six and walked one while going the distance to lead the Colby College softball team to a 2-1 victory over the University of Southern Maine in the second game of a doubleheader on Tuesday in Florida.
Southern Maine took a 5-0 win over the Mules (1-5) in the opener.
Olmsted, who had 13 strikeouts in a tough 1-0 season-opening loss to Luther College, has given up just two walks in two games.
The Mules took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning on RBI singles by Randi Arsenault (South Paris, Maine) and Mollie Puskar (Pittsburgh, Pa.). Colby had five of its seven hits in the inning and got hits and runs from Amanda Roehn (Tampa, Fla.) and Essie Widlanski (New York, N.Y.). Kara Fagan (Arlington, Va.) also had a hit in the inning and had two for the game.
The Huskies managed to get one run back in the bottom of the fifth, but Olmsted shut them down the rest of the way.
In the first game, Southern Maine's Katie Mainville had 13 strikeouts and Christen Lachapelle had three hits.
The Mules got hits from Fagan and Miki Starr.
Colby is off Wednesday and will take on Luther College at 11 a.m. Thursday and take on DePauw University later in the day at 1 p.m.
