Colby women's squash 1-1 so far at national tourney

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. --- The Colby College women's squash team took a 7-2 win over Connecticut College and then fell 9-0 to Cornell University in the Kurtz Division of the National Women's Squash Championships at Harvard University on Saturday.

The Kurtz Division is for teams ranked ninth to 16 in the country. Colby started the weekend ranked 13th, but easily took a 7-2 win over 12th-ranked Conn College. The Mules then lost a division semifinal match to ninth-ranked Cornell. Colby will play either Bates or Bowdoin on Sunday at 2 p.m. with the winner finishing 11th in the country and the loser settling for 12th.

Sophie Newbury battled back from a 2-1 games deficit to win at the sixth position for Colby in the win over Conn College. Stacy Petro, Emilie Slack, Nina Delano, Jessica Vogel, Beth Cole and Kate Dziedzic also had wins for the Mules.

In the loss to Cornell, Newbury also went five games in dropping a 3-2 match. She won the first two games and then lost tough 10-8 and 9-7 fourth and fifth games.
