Norsworthy second in 100 breaststroke at NESCAC meet
BRUNSWICK, Maine ---- Colby College sophomore All-American Kelly Norsworthy finished in second place in the 100-yard breaststroke and helped a relay team take second at the New England Small College Athletic Conference Women's Swimming and Diving Championships at Bowdoin College on Saturday night.
Norsworthy finished with a time of 1:03.41, but had the best competition in the country in Lindsay Payne. The senior from Williams College is the defending national champion in the 100 and 200 breaststroke races and holds the NCAA meet record in the 100 breaststroke. Payne had a winning time of 1:00.54, while Colby also received a sixth from Annie Muir in 1:07.00.
Norsworthy joined forces with Kelsey Potdevin, Maddie Given and Courtney Chilcotte to take second place in the 200 medley relay in 1:47.87. Williams narrowly defeated the Mules with a time of 1:47.33.
Muir, Sam Rose, Meg Vallaly and Jocelyn Burke combined to take eighth place in the 800 freestyle relay with a 8:02.84 clocking. Vallaly was also 10th in the 200 freestyle in 1:58.73.
Potdevin was ninth in the 100 backstroke with a 1:00.98 for the Mules. Beth Foxwell finished 13th overall in the event with a 1:02.43. Meanwhile, Given was 12th in the 100 butterfly in 1:00.84 and Jamie Warner took 15th with a 1:01.50.
Colby remained in sixth place heading into the final day of competition on Sunday. The Mules have 609.5 points and are just one-half point out fifth place.
