Dewey second in 50 backstroke at NESCAC meet

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. --- Jabez Dewey finished in second place in the 50-yard backstroke for Colby College on the first day of competition at the New England Small College Athletic Conference Men's Swimming and Diving Championships on Friday night.

Dewey had a time of 24.08 after going slightly faster in a preliminary race earlier in the day at 24.05. Amherst's Rick Estachio won the race and earlier in the day had a 23.53 in the prelim race for a new meet record.

Colby captain Chris DeSantis was sixth in the 50 breaststroke in 27.52.

The Mules also had three swimmers win consolation finals in finishing ninth overall in their respective races. Sam Wampler had a 21.88 in the 50 freestyle, Evan Mullin swam a 4:42.01 in the 500 freestyle and Andrew Peterson finished in 27.88 in the 50 breaststroke. Mullin's time would have placed him sixth in the championship final.

Colby is currently in fifth place with 302 points and was unlucky in that the Mules' 400 medley relay 'A' team was disqualified. The DQ cost the Mules anywhere from 40 to 50 points. Competition continues Saturday and ends on Sunday.
