Colby men's swim team best-ever fifth at NESCAC meet

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. --- Colby College had its best finish ever at the New England Small College Athletic Conference Men's Swimming and Diving Championships with the Mules taking fifth place on Sunday night at Williams College.

In the six years of the NESCAC holding the meet, Colby's best finish was last year at seventh place. The other four years were two eighth and two ninth place finishes.

The Mules finished with 785 points and had three other teams (Connecticut College, Hamilton and Bowdoin) within 100 points. The top four teams, including winner Williams, all had 1,000 points or more.

Colby's 400-yard freestyle relay team of Evan Mullin, Sam Wampler, Chris DeSantis and Jabez Dewey placed fourth in 3:11.0.

Dewey also took fifth in the 200 backstroke (1:53.52) and teammate Mike Finnerty was 12th in 1:59.61 (1:59.12 prelim).

Evan Mullin took seventh place in the 100 freestyle with a clocking of 47.64 (47.47 prelim). Sam Wampler won the 100 freestyle consolation final and his time of 47.51 would have placed him fifth in the championship final.

Colby diver Ian Cross placed ninth in the 3-meter competition and was 11th in the 1-meter event.

In the 200 breaststroke, Patrick Dean placed 11th in 2:15.13 and Chris DeSantis was 12th at 2:15.49.
