Cleaver helps Colby volleyball win Bates Invitational
LEWISTON, Maine --- Cait Cleaver earned the Most Outstanding Player Award and Colby College won the Bates Invitational volleyball tournament Saturday.
The Mules, ranked third in the latest New England Division III poll, improve to 15-1 overall after taking two come-from-behind wins Saturday after going 2-0 Friday night. Colby started the day with a 3-2 victory over eighth-ranked Springfield College by scores of 30-26, 24-30, 23-30, 32-30, 15-11. The Mules are 3-0 this season in five-game matches and all the matches were coming back from a 2-1 games deficit.
Colby also fought back against seventh-ranked Colby-Sawyer in the second match of the day for a 3-1 win by scores of 31-33, 30-27, 30-24, 30-27. Cleaver had 19 kills and 22 defensive digs in the win against Colby-Sawyer. Mariah Daly chipped in with 15 kills and seven blocks, while Megan Devlin had 13 kills and 19 digs.
On Friday night, the Mules had easy 3-0 victories over 14th-ranked Johnson & Wales (30-19, 30-18, 30-11) and 11th-ranked Plymouth State (30-21, 30-24, 30-22). Devlin had 15 kills and nine digs against Plymouth State. Cleaver added 13 kills, 11 digs and three aces. Kendall Kirby had 19 digs, Julie Hike had five kills and four blocks, and setter Jenny Lawrence finished with 45 assists.
Lawrence added 30 assists in the victory over Johnson & Wales. Kirby had seven service aces and 18 digs, while Daly finished with nine kills. Cleaver had six kills and 14 digs in two games.
No individual results were available for the Springfield match.
