Colby volleyball wins two matches in Maryland
WESTMINSTER, Md. --- The Colby College volleyball team went out of the region and still continues to win after beating Moravian College and Salisbury State in matches Friday at the McDaniel College Green Terrier Tournament.
The Mules improved to 22-1 overall with a tight 3-2 win over Moravian (30-13, 28-30, 31-29, 25-30, 15-11) and an easier 3-0 victory against Salisbury (30-27, 30-23, 30-26). Colby is 5-0 this season in matches going five games.
The two victories means Colby gets a huge test Saturday against defending national champion and current second-ranked Juniata College in a semifinal match in the championship bracket. The championship match is set for 4 p.m. and the consolation match is at 1:30 p.m.
How good is Juniata College in volleyball? The defending national champs have been to the national semifinals 18 times in school history and competed five times in the national title game before winning for the first time last year. Juniata went 37-3 last year and has never had a team since 1980 with less than 30 wins in a season. Head coach Larry Bock has more than 1,000 career wins in 28 years of coaching.
Jenny Lawrence, the NESCAC Player of the Week for last week, had 53 assists, 13 defensive digs and six service aces in the win against Moravian. Kendall Kirby set a new school record for digs in a five-game match with 42. Megan Devlin (18 kills, 17 digs, 4 aces), Kaitlin Adams (18 kills), Cait Cleaver (17 kills, 26 digs) and Meredith Lawler (career-high 12 kills, 3 blocks) also had fine matches for Colby.
Mariah Daly, Adams and Devlin all had 11 kills in the win against Salisbury. Cleaver finished with eight kills and 20 digs, Kendall Kirby had 25 digs, and Lawrence finished with 35 assists, 16 digs and six aces.
