Colby volleyball advances in first NCAA tournament
WATERVILLE, Maine ---- The Colby College volleyball team got on track quickly
in the first-ever NCAA Division III Tournament match in the program's
history. The Mules jumped out to a big lead in the opening game and went on
to a 3-0 victory over eighth-seeded Mount Ida in the opening round of the
New England Regional on Thursday at Wadsworth Gymnasium.
The top-seeded Mules improved to 35-3 and will play fourth-seeded MIT in a
regional semifinal Friday at 7 p.m. MIT took a 3-0 win against fifth-seeded
Bridgewater State. Colby-Sawyer, the sixth seed, and second-seeded Tufts
University will play in the first regional semifinal at 4:30 p.m.
Colby has played three New England Small College Athletic Conference
Championship matches and one NCAA match without allowing a game over the
last seven days.
Jenny Lawrence (Lafayette, Calif.) had 36 assists, seven digs and four
service aces to lead Colby. Cait Cleaver (Kennett Square, Pa.), the NESCAC
Player of the Year, finished with 10 kills and 11 digs. Mariah Daly
(Baltimore, Md.) also had 10 kills, while Megan Devlin (Branford, Conn.)
had nine kills, 14 digs and four aces. Kaitlin Adams (Athol, Pa.) had seven
kills and four blocks and Jessie Prentice (New York, N.Y.) had four service
aces in one game.
Mount Ida (21-9) received 21 digs and four kills from Jackie Kenel (Rockway
Beach, N.Y.). Christina Nikolaidis (Bourne, Mass.) had 29 digs and Kristyn
Correia (Westport, Mass.) had 20 digs.
