Gear McBride wins debut as Colby women's basketball coach

WATERVILLE, Maine ---- Colby College women's basketball coach Lori Gear McBride took no time in earning her first collegiate victory as a head coach with the Mules' 75-38 season-opening win over Newbury College in the first game of the three-team Colby Tip-Off Tournament on Friday night at Wadsworth Gymnasium.

Gear McBride, who played on the 1994 national champion University of North Carolina basketball team, had assistant coach stints with Seton Hall and University of North Carolina-Charlotte. She also was the head coach of a high school team in New Jersey for one season.

Colby's defense forced 32 turnovers in the game and the Mules (1-0) jumped out to a 36-14 lead at halftime.

Colby's Katie McCabe (Watertown, Conn.) had 11 points on 5-for-8 shooting and added four rebounds in just 14 minutes of action. Laura Williamson (Manchester, Conn.) added 10 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals for the Mules. Colby point guard Kathleen Nicholson (Tuftonboro, N.H.) had nine points and seven rebounds, Molly Rice (South Portland, Maine) had six points and nine rebounds, Lauren Duval (Shrewsbury, Mass.) had seven points and seven rebounds in her first collegiate game, and Regina Wohl (Westbrook, Maine) had six assists.

Randi Hardiman (Loudon, N.H.) had 12 of her game-high 15 points in the second half and had seven rebounds for Newbury (0-1). Brittney Larrabee (West Danville, Vt.) added eight points and Jessie Laliberty (Haverhill, Mass.) finished with seven points and five rebounds.

Newbury and Husson College will play in the second game of the tourney Saturday at 1 p.m. Colby returns to action Sunday at 1 p.m. against Husson in the final game.
