Colby women's basketball at 3-0 after beating Maine Maritime

WATERVILLE, Maine ---- The Colby College women's basketball team used an 11-2 run over the final 2:30 of the game to take a 65-58 non-conference victory over Maine Maritime Academy on Monday night at Wadsworth Gymnasium. Junior guard Tracy Nale (Waterville, Maine) had a collegiate-high 21 points and added five rebounds and three assists. Nale shot 8-for-12 from the field, 1-for-1 from 3-point range and was 4-for-4 from the foul line. Katie McCabe (Watertown, Conn.) added 12 points and eight rebounds for the Mules (3-0), while Kate Emery (Westford, Mass.) had 11 points and four rebounds despite playing just 14 minutes because of foul trouble. Emery scored four of her points during Colby's late run. Regina Wohl (Westbrook, Maine) and Kathleen Nicholson (Tuftonboro, N.H.) both had eight points and six rebounds for the winners.

Maine Maritime (2-1), which played in the NCAA Tournament last year after winning the North Atlantic Conference (NAC), trailed 54-47 with 5:32 left in the game, but the Mariners scored the next nine points to go up 56-54 with 2:30 left on a lay-up by Julia Knights (Brookton, Maine).

Emery tied the game with a lay-up with two minutes remaining and then nailed two free throws with 1:27 remaining to put Colby up for good. The Mules went 7-for-8 from the foul line in the final 39 seconds to put the game away.

Alyssa Burns (Dixfield, Maine) had a game-high 26 points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals for Maine Maritime. Knights had 10 points and four assists, while Michelle Gott (Tremont, Maine) finished with nine points and five rebounds.

Colby plays at Rivier College at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
