Women's basketball beats Middlebury, secures NESCAC playoff spot

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. --- The Colby College women's basketball team had four players in double figures as the Mules took a 60-38 win over Middlebury College and secured a New England Small College Athletic Conference playoff bid on Saturday.

The Mules and Middlebury both finished with 2-7 records in the league, but Colby earned the eighth seed thanks to the head-to-head victory. The Mules will play at top-seeded Bates College in a NESCAC quarterfinal next Saturday at 2 p.m.

Alanna Balboni had 12 points and 11 rebounds to lead Colby (9-14). Katie McCabe had a big all-around game with 12 points, seven rebounds and a team-high six assists. Tracy Nale led all scorers with 13 points, while Kate Emery finished with 11 points and seven rebounds. Tanya Rosbash added five points, five rebounds and four assists for the winners.

Colby led 24-23 at halftime and the game was tied at 28-28 early in the second half. The Mules, though, went on a 14-4 run to build a 42-32 advantage about 10 minutes into the half. Colby outscored the Panthers by an 18-6 margin to close out the game and secure the important win.

The Mules had a 42-31 advantage on the boards and Colby shot a fine 52 percent from the field. Colby shot 59 percent (13-for-22) in the second half. Meanwhile, the Mules' defense held Middlebury to just 22 percent shooting for the game and just a 19 percent effort in the second half.

Colby also shot 6-for-11 from 3-point range, including 3-for-5 from Emery.
