Colby women's hockey beats USM again

GORHAM, Maine -- Freshman forward Laura Clemson (Anchorage, Alaska) scored a pair of first period goals as the Colby College Mules never trailed en route to a 5-2 non-conference victory over the University of Southern Maine Huskies Tuesday night at the USM Ice Arena.

The win was the third straight for the Mules, now 3-1-0, since a season-opening loss at home to Connecticut College. Southern Maine dropped its second straight to the Mules to fall to 1-7-0. Colby won the first game of the home-and-home series last week 7-0.

Clemson put the visitors in the board just 45 seconds into the contest converting a pass from sophomore Lauren Goethals (Needham, Mass.). Just over five minutes later, an uncovered Clemson tapped home a pass for a power-play goal and a 2-0 lead.

Junior forward Kelly Connors (Topsfield, Mass.) cut the deficit in half for Southern Maine at 2:01 of the second period when she picked up a Colby turnover at the blue line, skated in on freshman goalie Lacey Brown (Freeport, Maine), and beat the rookie netminder with a wrist shot.

Thirteen second later, freshman forward Laura Anning (Ingramport, Nova Scotia) restored the Mules two-goal advantage off a set up from Goethals and freshman Amanda Comeau (Southbury, Conn.).

Late in the third period, the Huskies climbed back within one when sophomore defense Katie Quartuccio (Poughkeepsie. N.Y.) tapped in a loose puck after some good hard work out front by senior Caitlin Cashman (Tariffville, Conn.) and sophomore Lindsay Herzog (Hightstown, N.J.). The goal came at 17:09.

Any thoughts of a Huskies comeback were dashed eight seconds later as freshman center Colette Finley (St. Paul, Minn.) took the faceoff and skated through the defense to beat junior goalie Jen Arno (Westford, Mass.). Freshman Rebecca Julian (South Windsor, Conn.) added another insurance goal for the Mules at 18:07.

Arno finished the night with 24 saves for Southern Maine. Brown was credited with 14 stops for Colby.

Colby is off until December 10 when it travels to Bowdoin College.
