Colby women's hockey wins St. Michael's consolation game
BURLINGTON, Vt. --- Jennifer Caruso and Laura Clemson scored goals 1:22 apart late in the second period to help the Colby College women's hockey team take a 5-1 victory over St. Michael's College on Saturday in the consolation game of the St. Michael's Invitational.
The Mules (4-3) had a 59-9 advantage in shots, but could not put the game away. Colby led 1-0 after the first period after Laura Anning scored her team-best seventh goal of the season at 9:26.
St. Michael's (3-7) tied the game at 1-1 at 10:18 of the second period on a goal by Melissa Gagne on the power play.
Caruso got the eventual game-winning tally off an assist from MaryClaire McGovern at 15:36 of the second period. Clemson then scored unassisted at 16:58 to give the Mules a little breathing room.
Heather Nickerson had a goal off an assist from Marissa Mullane to make it 4-1 at 8:07 of the third period. Colby captain Caitlin Leahy closed out the scoring at 18:31 off a pass from Lindsay Barada.
Genevieve Triganne played the first two periods in goal and made seven saves and Shelley Payne saw her first action of the season with one stop in the third period for Colby. Annice Mason kept St. Michael's in the game with 54 saves, including 24 saves in the second period.
Colby will play at Williams College this Friday at 7 p.m.
