Women's hockey battles hard in semifinal loss to Middlebury
MIDDLEBURY, Vt. --- The Colby College women's hockey team kept two-time defending national champion Middlebury College off the scoreboard for more than 48 minutes, but the Panthers scored three times in a span of five minutes to pull out a 3-1 victory over the Mules in a New England Small College Athletic Conference semifinal game on Saturday at Kenyon Arena.
Colby goalie Genevieve Triganne, who made 47 saves in a 3-0 home loss to Middlebury earlier in the year, had 43 stops on Saturday to keep the Mules in the game. She had 21 saves in the first period and added 13 more in the second period.
Middlebury took a 1-0 lead at 8:21 of the third period when Annemarie Cellino scored off an assist from NESCAC Player of the Year Emily Quizon. With the Panthers on the power play, Quizon's shot was saved by Triganne and came to Cellino for the goal.
Colby (15-8-1) tied the game in a hurry when Rebecca Julian scored just 14 seconds later on a one-timer off a pass from Caroline Voyles.
The Panthers (23-2) got the game-winning goal on another power play when Erika Nakamura tallied at 11:56. She tipped in a shot off a blast from Tania Kenney. Quizon scored an insurance goal at 13:21 for the final goal of the game.
