Women's lacrosse wins first game in Colorado
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. --- The ninth-ranked Colby College women's lacrosse team exploded for 15 goals in the second half on the way to a 22-11 victory over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Monday at Colorado College.
Elizabeth Ghilardi (Norwell, Mass.) had five goals and one assist to lead Colby (2-1). Lauren Barrett (Fairfield, Conn.) added four goals and Libba Cox (Guilford, Conn.) finished with three goals and one assist. Kate Sheridan (Hingham, Mass.) and Allie Libby (Needham, Mass.) both had three goals, Courtney Drake (Falmouth, Maine) added two goals, Kelsey Neville (Duxbury, Mass.) had one goal and one assist, and Becky Julian (South Windsor, Conn.) had one goal.
Colby had a 5-4 lead in the first half and got key goals from Sheridan with 52 seconds remaining and Ghilardi with just 17 seconds left for a 7-4 lead at the break. CMS (5-5) scored three of the first four goals of the second half to make it 8-7, but the Mules scored six straight goals to take control.
Mallory Singer led CMS with three goals and one assist.
Catharine O'Brien stopped 13 shots for Colby, which had a 51-27 shot advantage.
The Mules will play Colorado College on Wednesday at 6 p.m. (EST) in a battle of top 10 teams. Colorado College was ranked fourth in last week's poll, but should move down when the rankings are announced Tuesday after losing this past weekend to Williams.
