Amherst women's lacrosse tops Colby in battle of top 10 teams

WATERVILLE, Maine ---- Junior Alyssa Briody (Hopewell, N.J.) scored with 3.9 seconds left in overtime to give eighth-ranked Amherst a 12-11 victory over the seventh-ranked Mules in a New England Small College Athletic Conference game Saturday at Bill Alfond Field.

With the win, Amherst (9-1, 5-1 NESCAC) snapped Colby's (11-2, 6-2 NESCAC) team-record 11-game winning streak.

Briody had four goals and an assist in the game and first-year player Amy Craig (Denver, Colo.) also had four goals to pace the Lord Jeffs. Sophomore Lauren Barrett (Fairfield, Conn.) had a standout performance with four goals for Colby.

Colby scored three quick goals to open the game, but Amherst fought back to lead 7-4 at the half. The Mules found themselves down three goals with 5:51 to play, but quick goals from Allie Libby (Needham, Mass.) and Barrett put them within one. With 2:07 to play, Colby first-year Kate Sheridan (Hingham, Mass.) tallied to even the score. Amherst had a chance for the win, but Colby goalie Catharine O'Brien (Reading, Vt.) had a point-blank save near the end of regulation to push the game to overtime.

Both goalies also had big saves in the extra frame, but a long offensive possession by the Lord Jeffs, capped by Briody's last-second goal, gave Colby no chance to mount another comeback.

Dana Kuper (Denver, Colo.) and Maddie Hoeg (Shoreham, N.Y.) both had two goals for Amherst. For the Mules, Sheridan and Libby both had two goals, Courtney Drake (Falmouth, Maine) had a goal and an assist, while Becky Julian (South Windsor, Conn.) and Libba Cox (Guilford, Conn.) had one goal each.
