Women's lacrosse beats Trinity, playoff game Sunday
HARTFORD, Conn. --- The Colby College women's lacrosse team earned the third seed in the New England Small College Athletic Conference Tournament after finishing the regular season with a 15-9 victory over Trinity College on Saturday.
The Mules will play sixth-seeded Williams College in a quarterfinal game Sunday at noon at Colby's Bill Alfond Field. Colby took a win over Williams earlier in the season, but it was the Ephs that came away with an 8-6 win against the Mules last year in a NESCAC quarterfinal at Colby.
Colby, ranked seventh in the country, finished the regular season 13-2 and ended up in a tie for second place with Amherst College at 7-2 in the league standings. The Mules tied a team record for wins in a season with victory 13. The 1986 squad finished 13-5 and the 2003 team, under current head coach Heidi Godomsky, went 13-4.
Kate Sheridan had one goal and three assists to reach 50 points in her first year with the Mules. She has 41 goals and 10 assists for 51 points. Meanwhile, leading scorer Allie Libby added two goals and one assist to move her season totals to 28 goals and 46 assists for 74 points.
Trinity (5-9, 2-7 NESCAC) opened up a 3-1 lead, but Colby scored the next five goals and led 8-5 at halftime. The Mules scored the first five goals of the second half to pull away for good.
Catharine O'Brien made seven saves for Colby.
