Colby women's lacrosse easily wins first-ever NCAA game
WATERVILLE, Maine --- Colby College attacker Allie Libby (Needham, Mass.)
became the Mules' all-time single-season scoring leader after scoring three
times and dishing five assists in a 21-5 victory over Plymouth State
University in the first round of the NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse
Tournament on Wednesday night at Bill Alfond Field.
The Mules (14-3), playing in their first-ever NCAA game, came out strong
and led 5-0 just 6:25 into the game and took a 15-3 lead at halftime.
Plymouth State ends its season at 13-6. Colby had taken a 24-15 win over
the Panthers in a home game during the regular season.
Colby will take on rival Bowdoin College in a NCAA Regional Semifinal game
this Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Middlebury College. Union College and
Middlebury play in the other semifinal game at 11:30 a.m. The winners of
Saturday's game meet Sunday at 1 p.m. at Middlebury in the Regional Final
for the right to go to the NCAA Final Four.
Libby now has 34 goals and 52 assists for 86 points to break the old
single-season scoring record of 46 goals and 38 assists for 84 points by
Nicki Furek in 2000. Libby already owns the single-season assist record.
Lauren Barrett (Fairfield, Conn.) had four goals and one assist, while Kate
Sheridan (Hingham, Mass.) added three goals and two assists for Colby.
Kelsey Neville (Duxbury, Mass.) had three goals and one assist and
Elizabeth Ghilardi (Norwell, Mass.) finished with two goals and two
assists. Courtney Drake (Falmouth, Maine) added two goals, Lauren Strazzula
(Norwell, Mass.) had one goal and one assist, and Heather Nickerson
(Falmouth, Mass.), Libba Cox (Guilford, Conn.) and Becky Julian (South
Windsor, Conn.) all had one goal.
Bethany Brown (Norwich, Conn.) had two goals to lead the Panthers. Meg
Cupoli (Southboro, Mass.) added one goal and one assist.
