Women's lacrosse has coach, four players earn NESCAC honors
WATERVILLE, Maine --- On the same day her team was playing in the NCAA tourney for the first time ever, Colby College women's lacrosse coach Heidi Godomsky was honored as New England Small College Athletic Conference Coach of the Year on Wednesday.
Colby midfielder Kate Sheridan (Tabor Academy/Hingham, Mass.) was named NESCAC Rookie of the Year and earned second team honors.
Junior attacker Allie Libby (Needham/Needham, Mass.) and junior goaltender Catharine O'Brien (Hotchkiss School/Reading, Vt.) both made the first team. Junior defender Liz Morbeck (Lakeside School/Seattle, Wash.) was on the second team along with Sheridan.
Godomsky, in her 13th season at Colby, owns a 123-76 career record to make her the all-time leader in career victories and winning percentage for the Mules. She led Colby to a 13-3 record heading into Wednesday's first round NCAA Division III Tournament game with Plymouth State.
Godomsky is the fourth Colby head coach to earn NESCAC Coach of the Year honors this academic year. Candice Parent (volleyball), Jim Tortorella (men's ice hockey) and David Venditti (women's ice hockey) also have earned honors.
Sheridan is third on Colby in scoring with 41 goals and 10 assists for 51 points heading into Wednesday's NCAA game. She leads the Mules in goals, game-winning goals (5), draw controls (46) and minutes played (829). Sheridan also is tied for second on the team in ground balls with 54 and has 22 caused turnovers.
Libby leads the Mules in scoring with 31 goals and 47 assists for 78 points. She broke the single-season assist record and currently ranks third nationally in assists per game (2.94). Libby is first in the league in points per game (4.88) and assists per game.
O'Brien ranks first in the NESCAC in save percentage (.533), second in saves per game (11.47) and is fourth in goals against average (10.18). She has a 12-3 record and has recorded 172 saves in 15 games.
Morbeck leads Colby in caused turnovers (35), ranks fourth in ground balls (49) and is tied for fourth in draw controls (24).
